12 memories from the 2000s that altered our brain chemistry

"Apparently!"

Hey pals! We were reminded that the infamous “apparently kid” viral video turned 10 years old, which means we’re all 10 years older, too. 😳

Today’s tunes: Unfortunately, we still have two days left until “Friday,” but we’re cranking this song up today like we’re getting ready in the dorms.

Have a question for us? We’d love to hear it here!

12 Memories From the 2000s That Altered Our Brain Chemistry

Let’s all take a second to look away from those 217 unanswered emails (oopsie!) and take a trip down memory lane (long before the days of endless scrolling) with some of our favorite 2000s memories.

Tabloid culture: Hang it in the Louvre! This pic of Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton was just one of the many paparazzi shots that graced the covers of US Weekly. And as much joy tabloid culture brought some (Gabi may or may not have had a subscription in high school, lol), we recognize the long-term effects it’s had on some celebs. Everyone’s just a person at the end of the day.

The Cinnamon Challenge: How bored were we that we thought shoving a spoonful of cinnamon in our mouths was the cool and fun thing to do? Who else tried this? Raise your hand. 🙋

Ashlee Simpson’s SNL performance: We can still feel the secondhand embarrassment from Ashlee Simpson’s lip sync fail on Saturday Night Live in 2014. But she seems to have recovered just fine, as she recently released an expanded version of Autobiography and performed live for the album’s 20th anniversary.

Fun fact: One time Gabi brought a pic of Ashlee Simpson’s bangs to her hairdresser 🫣

The first iPod: A giant upgrade from our anti-skip Walkman, the first iPod was released in 2001, and that scrolling click wheel sound will forever scratch our brains. Let’s also not forget about paying $0.99 for a song that we listened to on repeat for a week (if you didn’t download it off of Limewire of course). Pretty sure Rod’s first iPod song was “Lonely” by Akon…LOL. What was yours?

Viral YouTube and Vine videos: David After Dentist, Charlie Bit Me, Alabama Leprechaun, and the HELLO? Water Bottle Girl viral videos still live rent-free in our heads. Email us and let us know which one you and your friends couldn’t stop giggling about.

Peak American Idol: The hold that American Idol had on us every Tuesday night was next-level, and don’t even get us started on when From Justin to Kelly came out! Also, still don’t want to talk about the absolute upset that was David Archuleta losing to David Cooke. Glad to see he’s thriving now!

PC culture: Picture this: You get home from school and grab a Kudos bar from the pantry next to a ceramic rooster. You head to the computer room and press the PC’s power button with your big toe. As you log on to the internet, the sweet music of dial-up graces your ears, and you spend the rest of your “computer time” setting your AIM away message before clocking in as a Barbie Riding Club equestrian and/or a Cedar Point contractor with Rollercoaster Tycoon. Life is good.

Unhinged MTV shows: Let’s be real here, Next, Parental Control, and Room Raiders walked so The Bachelor franchise could run. Would have loved to be a fly on the wall in those writers’ rooms…

The launch of Facebook: A big motivator for applying to college was the official email address you needed to make a Facebook, right? Kidding, but like, can we all admit that poking your crush on the app was way more exciting than swiping these days? Not to mention the ~Live, Laugh, Love~ photo albums uploaded from your friend's garage party the night before.

ChaCha being the first ChatGPT: Take us back to the good old days when we’d fire off T9 and text 242-242 to ask for a knock-knock joke. Of course, only after 7pm though, when texting was free!

eBaum’s World: If we were having a bad day (shoutout Daniel Powter), we could always count on unplugging the family phone line, connecting to the World Wide Web, and surfing eBaum’s World for “dank” memes and good laughs. Can we say that the Numa Numa guy was the first content creator?

Celebrity reality TV: There’s arguably no better TV than The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie working on a farm in Dior shoes, but that’s just our opinion. And other shows like Newlyweds, A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila, The Osbournes, and I Love New York, are just a few others that came well before The Kardashians.

Well, there ya have it, a handful of some of our favorite Millennial moments from the 00s. There are obviously a ton more, and now we wanna hear yours!

If you want to see a Part II featuring WorkDaze readers’ faves, reply back to this email and tell us some 00s moments you’ll forever remember.

…while you rewatch the entire first season of The Simple Life.

BRB immediately adding Sivanskitchen’s crispy rice salad to the dinner lineup this week. 🤤

While Millennials are worried about using other words instead of “proficient” (may we suggest “well-versed?”), Gen Z is really just out here applying for jobs with things like “Harry Styles’ #1 Fan” and “Brat Summer Enthusiast” on their resumes.

Hey Siri, play “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.” You’re either one kid or the other in this; which one are you?! They’re both stars in our hearts! 🥺

Thanks so much for reading! Hope you have the best week ever, we lysm! See you next Wednesday. 🙂
