Awards season for dummies

I want to thank me

Hi friends! I missed you last week, but believe it or not, I actually listened to my own advice and took a mental health day. If you need it, this is your reminder to take one!

SOTD (Song Of The Day): In the spirit of awards season and today’s topic, we’re traveling back in time to 2010, blasting “All I Do Is Win” in our graphic tees and peplum tops.

And the Award Goes to…

IMHO we all deserve an Oscar for smiling and nodding on calls when we literally have zero clue what’s going on, but that’s a topic for a different day...

In the spirit of me never being able to let anything go, after this year’s Oscar noms, I went down a rabbit hole to learn who’s in charge of calling the shots when it comes to crowning the winners.

Academy Awards/Oscars: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has over 10,000 members across 17 different branches who select nominees for each award category.

Members are only allowed to select nominees for their specific branch (i.e. actors select in the acting categories, directors select for Best Director).

All members (regardless of branch) can cast a vote for Best Picture by ranking 5-10 nominees. If a selection gets a certain amount of first-place votes, it becomes a nominee.

Once nominees are chosen, all voting members can cast their ballots for winners in any category.

Emmys: The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is made up of over 20,000 members separated into “peer groups” depending on their expertise.

Once applications are in, the members choose nominees by voting for those that “exemplify excellence.”

Before choosing winners, voters must watch episodes of the nominated selections, chosen by the shows’ producers.

Votes are cast online with a verification process to make sure voters have actually watched what they’re rooting for.

Grammys: Only about 12,000 out of 21,000 members of The Recording Academy are allowed to vote.

A member can become a voter if they’re 1) in good financial standing with the Academy and 2) endorsed by at least two Recording Academy voters.

Before nominations, 350 experts from various genres determine the eligibility of a submission, including category placement.

For both nominations and final voting, voting members can vote for up to 15 categories in their speciality fields, yet all can vote for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.
