How to be a good mentor

I got your back!

Hi friends! The good news? The sun won’t set until after 7pm now for a bit. The bad news? We’re still recovering from springing forward over here. 😵‍💫

Song of the day: In 2020, Doechii posted a video online after she was fired. This year she won the Grammy for Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal. Moral of the story? Follow those dreams! And don’t mind us still trying to learn all the words to “Denial Is A River.”

How To Be A Good Mentor

Having an A+ mentor in your life can make all the difference for both personal and professional growth. While your mentor can be a friend, they can also be a separate relationship depending on your sitch. We both have various mentors in our work and personal lives, and have found them to be incredibly valuable in some of the most important times in our lives.

While mentorship is different for everyone, if you’re looking to be a good mentor yourself and help enrich someone else’s life, here are three things we’ve found good mentors tend to do.

Provide Clear Guidance and Support: A good mentor offers clear advice tailored to the mentee's goals and challenges. Not just a coffee walk as an excuse to leave the office... Take the time to learn their needs and then offer thoughtful recommendations. Don’t forget to be patient, listen actively, and check in with your mentee to make sure your feedback is helpful but also encouraging.

Foster a Growth Mindset: We’re all just learning here! Teach your mentee to embrace challenges and view failures as opportunities for growth. Learning from setbacks and pushing beyond comfort zones are two things that will only better us in the end. Just remember how you’re terrified of feedback, they may be as well! By fostering a growth mindset, you help your mentee build resilience and the skills needed to overcome obstacles on their journey.

Be Approachable and Build Trust: A strong mentor-mentee relationship is built on trust and mutual respect. In order for your mentee to feel comfortable sharing their concerns and hopes for the future, you have to create a safe space, and be approachable, relatable, and empathetic. Showing genuine interest in their progress, celebrating their successes, and offering guidance when needed, will solidify your relationship.

…after you unmute yourself on a video call only to say “bye, thanks.”

A certified healthy sweet treat?! You have our attention. The Healthy Hop Head’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Apple Rings are our latest obsession we’re stocking the freezer with.

We’re currently LOL’ing watching Running Point on Netflix. Kate Hudson plays a daughter of a professional basketball team family, who gets appointed president of the team and has to make shit happen against everyone else’s wishes. With Mindy Kaling as a creator, you already know it’s good.

We’re always looking for fun ways to stay connected with our LDBs (long-distance besties)! We’re loving SpreadsheetShan’s “podcasting” photo album idea. As if our voice notes to each other aren’t long enough!

We love you guys so much! Thanks for spending part of your day with us, we’ll see you next week!
