How to Say “No” Without the FOMO

 question 
I’ve always been a “yes” person and get really bad anxiety whenever I say “no” to things. Recently, I’ve been trying to cut back on doing things because I want to save money and tbh just take a little bit more time for myself. Any advice on not having FOMO (fear of missing out)? —Q.

 answer 
One thing we both do to help ease our FOMO? Make plans in advance. We know it sounds simple, but penciling in plans weeks or even months in advance 1) gives us something to look forward to and 2) allows us to focus on other things (saving money/working on ourselves) when we know we have something coming down the pipeline.

Editor’s Rod’s Note: The plans you make don’t have to be elaborate or include everyone from the group chat. Spending one-on-one time with just one other person on your couch binge watching the latest season of Selling Sunset can help keep that FOMO at bay without breaking the bank.

Keeping the Gossip Out of Office Group Chats

 question 
I just got a new job and all communication, whether it’s with my team, other departments, or even clients, is through Microsoft Teams. I'm still getting used to using it for multiple conversations, and I’ve definitely sent some embarrassing chats to wrong channels. Do you have any suggestions for differentiating the different chats in Teams or apps that can help? —E.

 answer 
Ooof, there’s nothing worse than sending a “Michelle is getting on my nerves today” chat to Michelle herself. First, and probably our number one rule regarding messaging at work? Do not, we repeat, DO not use any sort of work messenger to talk negatively about anyone, no matter how annoying Michelle may be. Remember that your company has access to all internal messaging platforms, and can use that information if needed.

Here’s what we recommend to avoid any other messaging snafus:

  • Take a beat. If you’re like the rest of the world, you’re probably working a mile a minute, and mistakes often happen when we work too fast. Before firing off your thoughts on the new Secret Lives of Mormon Wives drama, take five seconds to confirm who you’re sending it to before pressing enter. 

  • Name the channel. Just because you see the first few names in the chat doesn’t mean those are the only people in it. To ensure you’re sending WorkDaze memes to the right people, confirm who those people are before naming the group something that sets it apart from the other chats.

  • Use a different app. To avoid confusion, see if your team members are down to huddle in a different app, like Slack. This eliminates your anxiety before pressing send to your work besties about last night’s Hinge date.
