How to Switch Roles Internally Without it Getting Weird

I’m looking to switch departments within my company when an opening becomes available on another team. I really like my manager, so I don’t want to sour my relationship with them or my team, but I just feel like it's time to grow elsewhere within the company. What's the etiquette when it comes to internal job postings and letting your manager know? —S.

 answer 
Your manager can be sad to lose you and also happy for you…two things can be true! But if your manager is a good egg, they'll want you to succeed. And if they’ve invested in your growth, they’ll be proud when you’re ready to take the next step, even if they’re a little bummed to see you go.

Two things to keep in mind when an opportunity to move on comes up?

• Give them a heads-up. If you’re pursuing a move, let your manager know before they hear about it from someone else. Tell them you’re excited to keep growing within the company, and that your interest in another team isn’t a reflection of how you feel about your current one. If they have your best interest in mind (which all managers should), we promise they won’t be mad at you!

• It’s a move, not a messy breakup. Keep doing your job well, and help make the transition smooth if you do make the move. Ask your manager directly, “What would you need from me to make this transition as easy as possible?” Leaving on a high note will always leave the door open for more opportunities. You never know when your former boss might be the person recommending you for something in the future.

We can still feel the excitement of going to Office Max with our parents and spending way too long picking out the perfect combination of folders, notebooks, and pens… and yes, our Trapper Keeper had to match our lunch box.
