So you were wrong...

Hey guys! Today’s word of the day? Flummox. Meaning to confuse or perplex. I was flummoxed and annoyed when my coworker scheduled a meeting for 8am on a Monday. 

Song of the day: Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need” instantly puts us in a good mood. And well… we think we all could use a little more of that these days!

You Don’t Need To Climb the Corporate Ladder

 question 
I just had a great 1:1 with my boss where she mentioned she thinks I’m ready to start working towards a promotion that would be the next level up. Although I’m flattered that she thinks I’m working hard enough to get to that level, I’m perfectly content where I am in my role right now. How do I go about telling her I don’t want that responsibility without sounding like I’m being lazy? —T.

 answer 
Listen, it’s super flattering when your boss says you’re ready for a promotion! Like seriously, go you! And yes, while recognition feels amazing (we love validation!!), just because the corporate ladder is there doesn’t mean you have to climb it like the stairmaster you’re supposed to climb tomorrow AM (tbd). If you actually like your job, your workload isn’t crushing your soul, and your salary affords you the life you want to live, you’re allowed to just… stay put.

As for the conversation with your boss. Let’s chat about a few ways to go about starting (and ending for now at least) the corporate ladder convo.

🙏 Show Appreciation
You can say: "I really appreciate your confidence in me and the opportunity. It means a lot to know my work is being recognized."

🙂 Express Contentment and Current Focus
You can say: "Right now, I’m really enjoying the work I’m doing and feel like I’m still growing and learning a lot in my current role."

🚪 Keep the Door Open for the Future
You can say: "I’m definitely open to growing into more responsibility down the line, but at this moment, I’d prefer to continue deepening my expertise here."

What To Do When You Disagree With Your Boss

 question 
I recently strongly disagreed with my boss in a meeting and they turned out to be right. Not only do I feel dumb, but I feel like I need to address it with them. How should I go about doing so? —L.

 answer 
We all make mistakes. Although you were wrong, it sounds like you cared enough about the subject to at least have an opinion and that’s something! With everything going on in the world, it takes a lot to care about things these days (especially when it comes to work lol). A few things you can do to make the situation a little less uncomfortable for both sides?

  • Acknowledge their insight – Privately talk to your boss and let them know that you see their point and appreciate their perspective.

  • Own it – Admit that you were wrong, what you missed, and/or misunderstood, without over-apologizing. Save your sorries for when you really need them!

  • Learn the lesson – How you handled the situation, the actual solution… they’re all lessons to learn from. Take this experience and apply it to whatever else comes along in the future.
