How to Stop Making Up Situations In Your Head
question
Do you have any tips for getting over something you’ve built up in your head? —L.
answer
As both the king and queen of Worrytown, USA, we absofreakinglutely relate to writing an entire fictional YA novel in your head in less than two minutes.
The good news? Research shows that ~91% of your worries don’t come true. Catastrophizing something that isn’t even reality can be exhausting, so let’s talk about a few things that help us when we start letting our thoughts run the show.
Meditate: Practicing mindfulness can help focus your attention on something other than that one thing that’s actually not going to happen. This 15-minute guided meditation for catastrophic thinking will be your BFF.
Journal: Writing things down, including your thoughts, worries, and feelings can help remind you what’s reality and what you’ve made up in your head. Whenever you feel a spiral coming on, try the indication vs. proof method to keep you as grounded as possible.
Exercise: One thing to do to keep your mental wellness in check? Keeping our physical wellness in check. Even if you’re short on time, a quick walk around the block or a 20-minute YouTube yoga workout video can be a good distraction when your mind starts to wander.
What To Do When Your Bestie Becomes Your Boss
question
How to deal when your work bestie gets promoted to your manager? —K.
answer
They’re your work bestie for a reason. We imagine you work well together, have things in common, and like spending time with each another (at least in the office). And these things can still exist, just in a different capacity.
One thing that you and your work bestie should do before management changes?
Have a one-on-one conversation. And a serious one at that! Since you know each other well already, it may seem silly, but laying out clear expectations in your new roles will set both of you up for success.
Just because you’re their friend doesn’t mean they should ask you to work outside your responsibilities. Just because they’re your boss doesn’t mean you get priority treatment over the other employees. And just because the two of you have spilled the tea about coworkers before doesn’t mean that should continue. You don’t need to become the middleman between your bestie boss and others.
Establish boundaries now so your relationship can remain positive in your new roles.
