How to spend your Summer Friday

Turning your job into a hobby, one city at a time

Happy Friday friends! In honor of the upcoming holiday weekend, it’s only fitting that we settle this age-old debate once and for all…does ketchup belong on a hot dog? Scroll down to cast your vote—because your voice matters.

Friday feels: Abercrombie & Fitch’s major comeback + Summer Friday activities = LFO’s summer anthem of 1999.

The WorkDaze Guide to the Ultimate Summer Friday

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, organizers, and early supporters who’ve been instrumental in the success of our WorkDaze Summer Fridays 2023 Campaign. Because it worked, right? Your boss read that email asking for Summer Fridays and had no choice but to say “hell yeah now pass the Lime-a-Ritas?”

That’s what we thought. So to celebrate 1) the glory of Summer Fridays and 2) the official unofficial start to summer this Memorial Day weekend, our team is sharing some fun ideas for bopping around our respective cities and making the most of a Summer Friday.

We’ve created guides for our cities—NYC, LA, Chicago, and Miami—but we want to see (and share??) your guide for your city, too. So fill us in on all the hidden gems in your hometown in the comments section of this newsletter or on WorkDaze’s Instagram.

Without further ado…the ultimate Summer Friday guides:

Summer in Chicago always makes me forget that it was literally 70 degrees colder here, like, seven weeks ago. And because we only have a few blissful months of #summertimechi to soak up before the arctic temps hit again, here are some of our favorite things to do, places to eat, and spots to see on a Chicago Summer Friday. Not mentioned: stuffing our faces with Portillo’s. We figured that was a given.

For many of us, the first summer we spent in NYC was during an internship that we almost certainly hated. The good news? There is so much more to summer in this city (*cough* the best city in the world *cough*) than sweaty intern bars and subpar Sweetgreen salads.

Our NYC team has compiled the best way to summer in the city, for all of us whose closest tie to the Hamptons is that white party episode from Gossip Girl season 2.

We were once told that the state of California actually invented summertime? Haven’t fact-checked it, but it feels true so let’s roll with it. Spending a Summer Friday in Los Angeles is like turning on Hulu to find a ’90s show to binge—you’ve got so many options you might not know what to do with yourself.

So? We called in an expert and friend of WorkDaze: Mady Maio, the cofounder of the travel recs startup Camber. Mady took a celeb shot here and did us the honor of curating her perfect Summer Friday in her home city of LA.

When it’s pretty much always summer in your city, you get really good at picking what the best things to do in the summer actually are. Here’s the list, crafted to perfection after many, many summers (both with and without access to a boat) in Miami.

Dupe there it is…sorry, had to. No shade to any Super fans, but TJ’s $9 Daily Facial Sunscreen really gives Supergoop a run for its money.

What’s a patio party or porch hang without a summer snack?! A quick and easy tomato, peach, and burrata salad is on my menu this weekend. What time are you coming over?

From beach reads to historical fiction, check out TIME Magazine’s list of 25 New Books You Need to Read This Summer if you’re looking to get lost in a book or two this sunny season. P.S. send me your own book recs please!!

That’s all for this week! Wishing you the longest and best weekend ever! See you back on Tuesday—we’re off on Monday! 🫶

IDK WHAT DO I KNOW?! LMAO!
